Who is Massimo Biondo?

Born in Rome, Massimo Biondo is 38 years old and has a degree in Agriculture from the University of Tuscia - Viterbo. His thesis on Forestry Sciences led him to develop an interest in the tobacco products sector, so much so that he turned his professional activities towards this field in which he still works.

The award-winning thesis is entitled 'The use of materials from the cellulose industry in the manufacture of tobacco products' and it was written in collaboration with his university supervisor, Professor Marcello Luna.

Motivation

The Examining Committee met on 3 June 2004 and announced that Mr Massimo Biondo was the winner of the First Edition of the 'Giovanni Barezzi' International Award for the following reason.

Mr Biondo's work is an in-depth analysis of the contribution made by paper components [cigarette paper, filters, filter wrapping paper, filter paper and conditioning papers] to the manufacture of tobacco products.

By looking into the paper industry's most up-to-date production systems, the work studies and ascertains the importance of research into cellulose materials for the definition of better smoking quality which, together with research into tobacco, is the new frontier for the tobacco industry.

In particular, the work is an excellent investigation into the ability of cellulose materials to ventilate and filter; it provides an important specialist contribution to research into, and information about, production techniques, an advantage for cigarette products of the future which will combine the act of smoking with smoke that contains fewer substances and which conforms to the new European Community regulations.
