The Prize is about projects, research, theses or studies related to the cigarette industry: cigarette design, paper, production and packaging. It has been awarded this afternoon at the Palazzo delle Industrie Bolognesi, headquarters of Assindustria in Bologna, during a ceremony with the presence of the Top Management of Cartiera del Maglio [Brian Ace, President; Ludovico Barezzi, Managing Director and his sister Stefania – both Giovanni’s children]; Giuliano Gotti Secretary General of Assindustria in Bologna; Paolo Culicchi, Vice President of Assocarta; Marilena Fabbri, Majoress of the Municipality of Sasso Marconi.
In this occasion Dayton H. Matlick - Chairman di SpecComm International - Raleigh [North Carolina] – USA, publisher of The Tobacco Reporter one of the most influential and worldwide widely-circulated magazine about cigarette industry and Donato del Vecchio - Corporate Communications Reputation Manager of BAT – British American Tobacco – Italy; branch of Rome talked over the Corporate Social Responsibility with realy interesting notes.

45 years old, coming from Montreal, Canada, Jeff Guiler works as Vice President Marketing at Imperial Tobacco Canada, the most important cigarette manufacturer of Canada.

The work of Mr. Guiler is a concrete example of the application of the most advanced techniques of analysis and research into all the phases of the management of a leading brand in a difficult market. In particular Mr. Guiler’s work should be considered an outstanding example of the capacity of product packaging to influence the end user, at the same time as increasing the image of the brand and differentiating it from its rivals.
This successful project led to innovative solutions with high added value for the customer, and revolutionary for the cigarette industry. In summary the project is a rare example of the use of logical and efficient management design.

The ‘Giovanni Barezzi’ International Award was created to honour the memory of an important entrepreneur. Giovanni Barezzi dedicated his life to the industry of paper production and his first contact with the world of paper mills dates back to the end of the Seventies, when he was offered the position of General Manager of Cartiera de Medici. At the beginning of the 1980s his proven ability led to his confirmation in office and, immediately afterwards, he was appointed Managing Director of Cartiere Binda.
His personality was such that subsequently he set off along his own entrepreneurial road and he contributed to bring about the recovery of the Cartiera del Maglio and Brodano, a long-established paper mill in Bologna.
The Cartiera del Maglio thus was founded. Giovanni Barezzi’s revolution was immediate and radical: all the departments of the company were totally reorganised and, after years at a standstill, massive investments were once again made in production.
And it was not long before the results became apparent: today, Cartiera del Maglio is one of the main players in the sector. As Vice-Chairman of Assocarta and Chairman of the Stazione Sperimentale Carta, Cartoni e Paste (Paper, Cardboard and Pulp Experimental Station), Giovanni Barezzi dedicated extraordinary commitment and energy to these associations.
The reform of the latter Institute and its transformation into a body which was totally at the service of the paper sector would not have been possible without Giovanni Barezzi’s tireless work.

It is in memory of this great entrepreneur who died prematurely on 30 July 2001 that the ‘Giovanni Barezzi’ International Award was created.

The objective of the second edition of this Award is to increase the interest of school/university students; professionals; R&D departments into subjects linked to all aspects of the production of cigarette.
The competition also aims at offering an almost unrivalled range of information by setting up a specific Documentation Centre where the most significant data will be collected.
To promote the ‘Giovanni Barezzi Award’, more than 2000 universities/research institutes, associations, managers and companies in cigarette industry have been contacted worldwide. This means a larger effort to promote worldwide the awareness of the Prize.

The promoter of this initiative is Cartiera del Maglio, a company which specialises in the production of cigarette paper. With state-of-the-art and automated equipment, this company has distinguished itself for its support and promotion of top-quality service since 1765.
Its consolidated experience, special attention to customers, highly technological systems and the care taken by everyone in the work they do, are central to the paper mill’s corporate philosophy and allow it to pursue constant improvement while respecting the environment.
