The Bolognese businessman Giovanni Barezzi was born in Milan in 1939 and began his professional career (after graduating in Political Science) as a management consultant with various major Milanese companies, specialising in strategic planning, programming and organisational systems.
His first contact with the world of paper manufacturing came at the end of the '70s when he was offered the post of General Manager of Cartiera de Medici, which was already quoted on the Milan Stock Exchange. Barezzi immediately stepped into the role and came up with results. At the start of the '80s, when the company changed its principle shareholder, his abilities were rewarded with the promotion as Managing Director of Cartiere Binda.
Acting on the request of friends, he then decided to embark on his own entrepreneurial scheme to salvage the company Cartiera del Maglio e di Brodano, a long-standing Bolognese paper producer.
And so Cartiera del Maglio was founded. In 1985 the company produced less than 4,000 tons per annum of cigarette papers (almost all the output went to the Italian state monopoly), plus a few hundred tons of other lightweight paper.
The revolution brought about by Giovanni Barezzi at Cartiera was immediate and radical: all the company departments were updated and massive investments were made after being stagnant for years.
The results were not long in coming: today Cartiera del Maglio is a major contender in the sector, producing 10,000 tons of paper for cigarettes and other uses, 80% of which is destined for the export market.
Besides his professional activity, Giovanni Barezzi also dedicated time and energy to promoting the sector in general. He was vice president of Assocarta and, since 1996, president of the Stazione Sperimentale Carta, Cartoni e Paste per Carta (Paper, Cardboard and Pulp Experimental Station). The complete transformation of this latter organisation into a body representing the paper industry would not have been possible without Giovanni Barezzis contribution.
And it is in Giovanni Barezzis memory, after his premature demise on July 30th, 2001, that the Giovanni Barezzi Award was founded.
